WHO We Are.

Operation Safe Escape is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, founded in 2016 with a single goal: to make sure that every person impacted by domestic violence has the resources, information, and confidence that they need to leave their abuser and stay safe once they do. We are an organization of security and safety professionals, volunteering our time and expertise to help people stay safe and live their best lives. And we do it all for free. We don’t change you to help you protect yourselves or your clients. We don’t change the people that come to us for help. We don’t make a profit, we’re just here because we want to help. We have experts in:
Computer and Mobile Security
Digital Forensics
Physical Security
Tech Support
OPSEC and OSINT
Disappearing online

And much more.

We’ve participated in over 3,000 successful escapes, and we’re a trauma informed / survivor-centric organization. Every one of our volunteers have thorough background checks; safety and trust is paramount to us.

We have over 100 volunteers with backgrounds in law enforcement, military, technology, advocacy, and other relevant skills that we can provide to your organization. No matter how skilled or knowledgeable the abuser or stalker is, we’re stronger when we all work together.

Our values:

  • Respect: We will treat our clients, partners, and one another with dignity and the respect they deserve
  • Professionalism: We will give our clients and partners our very best so they know they’re in good hands
  • Integrity: We keep our word and will do the right thing legally and morally
  • Innovation: We will always strive to find cutting-edge solutions to stay ahead of the adversary
  • Authenticity: As an organization, we are who we say we are. We live our own values hold ourselves accountable
  • The best people: We recruit and partner with the best processionals in their respective fields

HOW We Support our Clients.

Every case and situation is unique, so we don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach. During the intake process, we work with the client to determine what their needs are and how we can best help. Then, we assemble a team of experts to work with them in our secure online workspace.

We work with the client and their support system

  • Protect online accounts and devices, and keep an abusive partner out of both
  • Help them disappear online
  • Assist with safety planning and resources
  • Assess and implement  physical security, making sure their home or apartment is safe
  • Make sure  phones and computers are safe to use, especially when planning an escape
  • Determining whether or not the client has been hacked and, if so, attempt to identify the source
  • And much more

HOW We Support our Allies and Partners.

We help protect their clients

We help protect their principles and staff

We can support restraining orders and legal proceedings

We work with our allies and partners to protect their clients, whether they’re planning their escape, trying to break the isolation, needing to stay safe after escaping their abuser, or whatever other needs they may have.

It’s  important that our allies and their staff stay safe, too. We work with them to improve the security of their facilities, networks, and personnel practices, and to identify threats as soon as they’re made.

Sometimes, it can be difficult to get local law enforcement to help, especially when the client doesn’t know how to collect digital or physical evidence. We help support and report to law enforcement.

Examples

Sarah, 25

Sarah was married to her husband for three years when the abuse started. He installed monitoring software on her phone and was able to find her location and read her messages. She needed to escape and find an apartment where she’d be safe. We:

  • helped secure her phone and allow her to safely communicate with her loved ones again
  • assisted with safety planning, making sure she could work with her support system and make arrangements in secret
  • advised on state laws that would allow her to seal her name change and get a new social security number
  • performed Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) to make sure her plans weren’t compromised
  • walked her through securing her apartment and staying safe online
Ken, 37

Ken was dating his partner for six months. While the abuse never turned physical, it wasn’t long before he realized that he needed help. Unfortunately, by that time his partner controlled the finances and had access to all of Ken’s devices. He could only communicate while at work, and even then it was risky. We:

  • provided information on recovering from financial abuse
  • gave Ken a secure phone that couldn’t be tracked by his abuser, and a tool to browse the computer without leaving a trace
  • once he left, helped Ken secure all of his devices and accounts to avoid being tracked and hacked
  • helped Ken hide his new location, and left false trails to lead his abuser to the wrong location
  • prepared a forensic report that Ken was able to use to show law enforcement that his partner had broken the law by compromising his online accounts and devices

Please note: these examples are fictitious but based on actual events.

A MESSAGE from Our Director, Chris Cox.

I’ve had the privilege of working with Operation Safe Escape since the beginning, and it continues to be an honor to serve the amazing people that we work with.

We believe that you deserve the same level of security expertise and resources that  companies pay heavily for; we also believe that you have better things to do with your funds. We believe that no one should have to pay money to stay safe.

This is why we do what we do. We work tirelessly to make sure that you, our allies, and our partners are able to sleep soundly at night without having to worry about the next bill or the next meal. We’re here because we’re needed. We’re looking forward to helping you.

Chris
